The Mind, a Good Human Register

By Kimah Semir-nyuiy Terry

So I decided to travel out of my town Bamenda, to the Buea which is in the South west region. I knew, though it was a short time-out, I had no fears indeed whatsoever travelling. During my stay in Buea, I decided to step out one morning for administrative reasons. At my place of destination, the Synod office of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, the environment was serene, the environment was green and it had a calm atmosphere.

In the later hours of the day, I was sitting outside in front of a hall, the serene atmosphere became a noisy one because it started raining heavily and was accompanied by cold, a component of weather I am not so fond of. I watched as the rain poured down. I noticed the rain dropping from the roof of the house and it made loud sounds which didn’t mean much to me. As I watched the rain, I became sleepy and decided to lean on my chair and rest for a bit. I knew I wasn’t going to be deep in sleep.

In my sleep, I could still hear the rain dropping from the rooftop and making heavy sounds. The next I hear, is the rain drops from the roof sounding like heavy gunshots very near. I immediately got up so fast like waking up from a nightmare. There were other ladies sitting around me that day and one of them noticed and asked what the problem was and I told them, it seemed like the rain drops turned to gunshots. Interestingly they were one or two ladies from Bamenda too, and that is how the chapter for discussion concerning the fears we live in while in Bamenda was birthed.

It was from that day, I knew that my mind didn’t ignore the gunshots from far and near that I hear in Bamenda on a daily basis, the kidnappings, the killings and so on. People who travel from Bamenda or Northwest region to other parts of the country carry an imminent built in fear that can manifest itself at any time. So what about the children who grow up in such situations?

Indeed our minds are a good human register. Whatever happens around you be it good or bad, is recorded by your mind. When you find yourself in the situation, your mind then replays even the things you thought were never a bother to you.
